When I first designed this dress it was part of my “Memento Mori” collection and it’s since become a staple of Gloomth’s catalogue. I was originally inspired by Victorian dresses and silhouettes from about 1890, the fitted bodices and ruffled detailed skirts. I also loved the framed yokes and ruffle details on the bodices of that time.
Victorians adhered to strict rituals around mourning the death of a loved one. Each phase of mourning requires different clothing or accessories. In the later stages where it becomes less strict mourners often wore a black ribbon or had crepe details worked into their clothing to acknowledge their loss- so I added black velvet detailing to this dress. It’s obviously not a traditional Victorian dress, it’s shortened and it’s all one piece rather than a bodice and skirt and belt. Typical to Gloomth’s signature style, it’s a blend of historical fashion and subculture aesthetics.
