I was recently asked why I never post anything particularly personal on this blog. Well, the easy answer is that the blog is for Gloomth- and I’m not my brand, I just “work here” (heh). But that’s not strictly true, Gloomth is my monster, and it’s got a lot of my heart and soul poured into it (not to mention hours).

So in an effort to be slightly more visible as the person behind the curtain I decided to fill out our Model Interview (with a few questions changed for relevance). 😛

How did you get started designing clothing?
I have been sewing and altering clothing since I was maybe 12/13. I grew up in a very rural part of Canada and there weren’t the shopping options (or internet for that matter) that people have now- so if I wanted something different I had to do it myself. I started Gloomth on a whim, to be honest. I’d recently relocated and hated all the crummy part time jobs and felt like my design degree was going to waste, I started altering clothes and selling them on ebay and soon we had a brand and a site and and and!

How did you choose the name Gloomth?
“Gloomth and the cult of melancholy” is a quote from a book about the Victorian history of death culture and mourning. I’m a huge mourning era nerd and collect ephemera from that period, I wanted the brand to have the influence of that style and have always loved the term “Gloomth” as it refers to the perpetually mourning members of that time.

Tell us about the craziest photoshoot you’ve ever participated in! Any silly mishaps?
We once did a large scale shoot in a hotel that had been abandoned for a decade without power or heat. It was January. It was freezing. I kept removing layers of my clothing and draping the poor models.

What’s your favorite Gloomth outfit?

I wear my “Library” dress almost every week! It’s just such a quick and awesome outfit, I love pairing it with my argyle thigh highs or with tattered punky tights.

What do you do in your “offline” life?
There’s a life outside of work now? What’s that? I am a voracious reader, I make tons of silly crafts and alter clothing for myself, I obsessively research things, I spend time with my friends.

How would you describe your personal style? Do you prefer to dress up or be a slouch?

I tend to overdress at every opportunity. I am always working on my wardrobe or experimenting with things, and wearing all my silly crafts. I made a cat brooch recently (photo). As for codifying my style, it’s kind of hard to describe. I’m not strictly Gothic (though I was for many years)- right now I’ve been wearing a lot of white/cream with bits of blood red and medical influences. Anything tattered or romantic. Hats!

What five things do you have with you in your bag/purse/whatever at all times?
Wallet, day planner, cell phone, pens, sketchbook.

What do you spend most of your online time doing?
Working. If not working then I am researching or goofing off on facebook or watching netflix (Netflix Tip- Watch what’s rated the most poorly, it’s usually really good!).

Top three worst movies you’ve ever seen?
“Team America”, “Napoleon Dynamite”, and “Suckerpunch”.

I am on Google+ and I will hopefully be posting more semi-personal junk there (as in outfit photos and craft stuff and whateverhaveyou- if I ever grow a pair).
