Interview~

Well, the questions are in and I am going to try and answer them all to the best of my “ability”. 😛 Thank you to everyone who submitted one!!!

How old are you?

As old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth. 😉 Maybe older or younger than you probably think.

What are your “rules” (more like guidelines anyway) for putting together a good outfit?

I think a good outfit consists of clothing that flatters your shape or coloring and makes you feel awesome. It’s less about the flattering and more about the feeling, I believe. Some people can wear a paper sack and still *own* that paper sack. My own policy towards a good outfit is probably some variation of “oh yeah, that is so odd it works”.

Which fashion trends annoy you the most?

Flip-flops worn outside of a home/gym-shower/beach setting. The uncharming look of men who wear their trousers belted below their actual ass so they walk like toddlers with dirty diapers.

Where are your favourite places to shop in Toronto or online?

I am a huge vintage and thrift addict, in the city I shop at a lot of those types of stores. Everything from Kensington Market to Value Village. Online it is usually ebay or Asian wholesale sites. Oh, and this weird website called “Gloomth”, I have a lot of their stuff.

How long does it take you to draft one of your patterns?

Oh the answer to this is far different than it would have been several years ago. I think we have it down to an “art” now but that was a huge learning curve initially. From sketch to garment takes about 2-4 weeks depending.

What is your dream world to live in?

Under the sea!!! I want to be a big catfish or an anglerfish. (Oh how I wish that were a joke). My dream world is one where artists and creative types are regarded as something other than frivolous. Where people respect one another in all things.

Your house is on fire and you can’t put it out. What do you grab as you run [or walk or crawl] out, if you do take anything?

My cat! The hand bound copy of my favourite book, laptop, my white antique peignoir (one has to be a little fancy post fire).

If you like to watch TV, what is your favourite show/station?

TV and I don’t get along. I tend to argue with the programs and get upset by furniture commercials. I watch a lot of movies and documentaries on netflix however. My favourite show was “Six Feet Under”, I have yet to find anything I like half as much. I read a lot though!

What/who is your favourite book/writer?

This is one of those questions I’d have answered differently a few years ago, I get quite obsessive about books but taste grows/develops. My top books are probably (in no order)- Miriam Toews’ “A Complicated Kindness”, “The Virgin Suicides” J. Eugenides, LOTR, “How to Commit Suicide in South Africa” Mets/Coe, anything by Naomi Klien. I could probably list books all damn day.

Long or short hair [for each gender]?

Personally, I tend to prefer long hair on females but some women look perfect with shorter styles. I don’t really like long hair on boys.

Do you have any piercings/tattoos?

Yes. I have 2 tattoos, one of which fills most of my back. Both are from books because I am that nerdy. I have had several piercings but currently do not have any.

What’s the hardest lesson you’ve had to learn running your own business?

Not to take everything personally. From complaints to bad interpersonal work experiences, it’s hard not to let those things effect you deeply. Developing a thicker skin, being less upset by peoples’ choices. To keep striving even when you have bills due and it feels hopeless. I guess these are just regular “life” lessons and not strictly work related.

What is the best part of your job?

Sharing my peculiar vision with others, the connection formed therein. It’s incredible to see my imaginings become real garments and then be worn by people all over the world. I am constantly humbled by that.

What IS your problem with sandwiches?

No idea. I just can’t do the whole between-bread thing, it grosses me out. Always has.
